The NBA Dribbled Out

I’ll never forget watching Ben Wallace outplay Shaq in the 2004 NBA Finals. He was a svelte, 6’9” 250 pound defensive machine and the backbone of those mid-aught Pistons teams that nobody watched, but that won—a lot.

Ben was never appreciated as much as he should have been; he was similar to those Pistons teams in that regard. I will always feel lucky for ignoring the ignorance about his game, and watching him as closely as I could throughout his career. He was an old school player and one of the only modern NBA guys my old man said  ”would have made a great Celtic in the 1960’s.” That’s the ultimate compliment from my old man.

He hustled his way into my heart. Ben Wallace will not be forgotten.
